The Myth of Europa - Phase 1

The team at the Irish Institute of Music and Song (IIMS) is made up creative professionals each pursuing with their own exciting musical endeavours while also contributing to the educational ethos of IIMS.

"The Myth of Europa" is one such project. Phase 1 just finished in November, this project is produced by Dónal Kearney and co-created with his brother Mike - a funk composer based in Edinburgh.

The narrative is based on the story of Europa, a princess from Greek mythology. The continent of Europe was named after this mythological character, and there is a sculpture of her close to the European Union buildings in Brussels. There is also an image of her on the Greek €2 coin.

However, this unique retelling brings Europa's story in contact with figures from Celtic mythology.

To date, the project involves sean nós singer and fiddler Eithne Ní Chatháin and the Leinster String Quartet. Recorded in Displace Studios in Dublin, phase 2 of The Myth of Europa is expected to be completed by the end of 2020.
