Postponed - Leaving Cert Online Revision Course

In light of today's official announcement by Minister for Education and Skills Joe McHugh TD, the Irish Institute of Music & Song (IIMS) has postponed the launch of its Leaving Cert Online Revision Course.

This 6-week online course is designed to provide intensive preparation to students studying for this year’s Leaving Cert Music exam. IIMS is offering two options for students to participate in the course: ACTIVE and PASSIVE learners.

ACTIVE learners will interact with course teacher on a weekly basis, allowing them to ask questions directly during the class. You will also receive:

  1. Private YouTube link to watch back your Revision class

  2. Revision materials

  3. Exam information re: past paper questions, etc.

PASSIVE learners will receive their resources via email each week to study according to their own timetable.

Who is this course for? - All students sitting Leaving Cert Music exams in summer 2020 - Students who want to secure the highest mark possible in Leaving Cert Music - Students who feel they need extra support from a qualified Music Teacher - Students who want to build confidence in the build-up to their written exam The course includes revision of all Listening and Composing Essential Activities. The following subjects are covered in detail: - Set Works - Melody-Writing - Harmony - Irish Music (Q. 5) - Unheard Listening (Q. 6)

About the Teacher

Liz Stears has several years' teaching experience both in England (A-Levels) and Ireland (Leaving Cert). Liz completed her Master's in Education at Trinity College Dublin and Bachelor's degree at University College Dublin.

Liz works with the State Examinations Commission as an Examiner and a Corrector for the Leaving Certificate Music exams.

In her own words:

Irish Music: The variety of styles and contexts of Irish traditional music todayUnheard Listening: Comparison of different musical styles, including popular music

WEEK THREE - Composing I [1 hour]

Melody-Writing - Major Melody in Continuation of a Given Opening

WEEK FOUR - Composing II [1 hour]

Melody-Writing - Minor Melody in Continuation of a Given Opening

WEEK FIVE - Harmony I [1 hour]

Major Harmony - Composing Bass Notes and Chord Indication of a Given Tune

WEEK SIX - Harmony II [1 hour]

Minor Harmony - Composing Bass Notes and Chord Indication of a Given Tune."

The official announcement about the postponement of the 2020 Leaving Cert exam schedule was published on the education.ie website on Friday 10 April:

Minister McHugh said plans were being put in place for the postponed Leaving Certificate examinations to begin in the last week of July or early August, subject to public health advice.

Schools remain closed until further notice and a new Leaving Certificate exam timetable will be confirmed in early June. The final Junior Cycle examinations, which were due to take place in June, will be replaced by school-based exams and assessments held early in the new academic year.

Practical examinations for Leaving Certificate students which were due to have been held in May are deferred. They will be rescheduled for late July/early August.
