Podcast Episode 5 - Choral Education in Quebec

The IIMS podcast brings you the latest ideas and happenings in music education from all over the world.

In conversations with performers, academics and educators, we strive for an innovative and creative approach to music education. The podcast is curated by Dónal Kearney in Dublin, Ireland.

Episode 5 brings you a conversation with Philippe Ostiguy, Artistic Director of Les Petits Chanteurs de Laval in Quebec, Canada. Together with his choir, he travelled to Ireland in early March to participate in the inaugural Fingal International Festival of Voices.

This French-Canadian group were due to compete alongside USA choir Providence Choral and Belarusian ensemble Salutaris. The festival was also due to welcome North American and British adjudicators. Not to mention the choirs, barbershop ensembles and conductors from the four provinces of Ireland.

Unfortunately, the inaugural Fingal International Festival of Voices was cancelled in March 2020 due to public health concerns surrounding the outbreak of Covid-19.

We hope you enjoy this illuminating conversation, in which we discussed French-Canadian singing culture, how to inspire a boys choir, and the importance of having fun when rehearsing!
