Podcast Episode 20 - Ardú (Guest Artist)
The IIMS podcast brings you the latest ideas in music from all over the world.
The Irish Institute of Music & Song (IIMS) podcast hosts conversations with performers, academics and educators from all over the world. The podcast is curated by Dónal Kearney in Dublin, Ireland.
In our IIMS Guest Artist series, we sit down with groups and performers who visit the Irish Institute of Music & Song campus in Balbriggan, Co. Dublin.
Our IIMS Guest Artist in episode 20 is Ardú, Ireland's premier a cappella vocal band.
The group specialises in contemporary unaccompanied vocal music in various styles.
Ardú has performed throughout Ireland and abroad including at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, London A Cappella Festival, Vokal Total in Graz, Austria, and at the Cork Choral Festival, where they opened the 2018 festival alongside Swedish trio Solala. Ardú has toured in Croatia, Austria and Italy and were also invited guests at the International Choral Festival of A Cappella Music in Chivasso, Italy in August 2019. They supported American a cappella group Straight No Chaser at the National Concert Hall, Dublin in September 2019.
Ardú have also won many awards, including first prize in the 2018 Choirs for Christmas competition on RTÉ Lyric FM and were runners-up in the 2019 Contemporary A Cappella Recording Awards in the ‘Best Classical/Folk song’ category for their recording of "Homeward Bound", arranged by Oliver Lambert. Ardú were also awarded the audience award at the 2019 Vokal Total festival in Austria.
Ardú founded the annual Irish International A Cappella Festival in 2017 and operate a nationwide outreach programme for singers of all ages.
During the group's recording session at the Irish Institute of Music and Song, Dónal spoke to artistic director Ciarán Kelly, soprano Laura Shields and bass Adam Hannon, about their repertoire, their recording process and their experience of making music together during lockdown.
