Online Choral Conducting course (June/July)

This brand-new online beginner course in choral conducting has been designed for primary & secondary school teachers, musicians and singers.


It is the first of its kind to be launched at the Irish Institute of Music & Song and will be facilitated by Michael T. Dawson, award-winning conductor & music educator.


To reflect the situation of choirs across the world in 2020, this course will explore ways for conductors to overcome the challenges of social distance singing.


Michael will give teachers and conductors tips and tools for running a productive rehearsal during a pandemic.


This unique 4-week course will provide each participant with a solid foundation in conducting, allowing them to confidently stand in front of a group of people and conduct music in multiple parts.

The course facilitator is Michael T. Dawson, who worked at National University of Ireland (NUI) Maynooth. Under his leadership, the NUI Maynooth Chamber Choir won several international titles, including "Choir of the World" at the Eistedfodd in Wales.


Michael is currently finishing up a doctorate in choral music from the University of Southern California where he also taught for 3 years as a teaching assistant. He has studied with the top choral conductors in the U.S and previously toured the world as a singer with Anúna.


Course participants will also learn how to source suitable repertoire, teach healthy singing and use the latest technology to make their rehearsals as efficient, engaging and easy as possible. Spaces will be limited due to the interactive nature of the course so participants will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. No previous experience is required!


In the course, Michael will cover the following topics will be covered:


Week 1 - GESTURE

  • Basic conducting patterns

  • How gesture affects vocal sound

  • Exercises for warm ups

  • Cueing with the left hand


Week 2 - VOCAL HEALTH

  • How gesture affects vocal sound

  • Resources for repertoire & identifying good arrangements

  • Using technology to make rehearsals more efficient

  • Feedback on videos submitted


Week 3 - NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION

  • Say less, communicate more

  • How to study scores

  • Refining conducting gesture Left hand independence

  • Creating your own warm-ups based on vocal science


Week 4 - PERFORMING CONDUCTING

  • Analysis and feedback of submitted videos

  • Review of course content

  • Setting up a choir

  • Planning out a successful music education programme through choir
